Secretary Linda Hayes Visits Fayetteville on
Education Works Tour

FAYETTEVILLE - Dr. James A. Anderson, Chancellor of Fayetteville State University (FSU) welcomed Linda W. Hayes, Secretary of the NC Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention to the campus and to WFSS Radio.
Secretary Linda W. Hayes and Chancellor Dr. James A. Anderson Secretary Hayes travelled to Fayetteville as a part of Governor Perdue's Education Works Tour. Governor Perdue’s Cabinet members visited schools, community colleges, universities and other educational facilities to highlight the fundamental rule of economics: "growth requires investment – investing in our students and their future and the future workforce that enables North Carolina to grow." DJJDP Releases 2010 Annual Report

The North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention takes great pride in the release of the 2010 Annual Report. This report details supporting data of juvenile crime decreasing in the State of North Carolina. Data further reveals the rate of delinquency complaints filed dropped to a 12-year low. This phenomenal confirmation of the Department's work is a notable milestone. Other departmental updates include: evidence of success related to Quality Treatment Services, Re-establishing Career Technical Education Programming, and accountability through Peer Reviews.

 

Leading Expert in Cyberbullying

DJJDP Director of Community Programs, William "Billy" Lassiter was interviewed recently by WTVD, ABC11 in a story drawing attention to the growing problem of cyberbullying. Billy has been interviewed and lectured on many occasions, both locally and nationally and is respected as an expert. However, this recent interview is linked to a story here in North Carolina that has a juvenile and his parent seeking help from authorities. According to the news report, the bullying has escalated to death threats and Durham Police are conducting a full investigation.

Department Embarks on PREA Training Effort

In a collaborative effort, The North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and American University’s Washington College of Law, presented the Train the Trainer curriculum for "Building Staff and Youth Capacity to Address Sexual Violence Against Youth in Custody."  The training was conducted at the North Carolina Justice Academy in Salemburg, NC from August 2 through August 4.

 

Craven County Transitional Home Opens

The North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention held a Ribbon Cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the juvenile transitional home in Craven County. First Gentleman Robert Eaves and Secretary Linda W. Hayes joined community members, lawmakers, government officials, and juvenile justice representatives in celebrating the opening of this vital resource for the community and the State.
